Go to Core › Sessions to add or edit session names. Type the name, press Create.
What a session actually is
A session is a label stored on the student record. It is free text — schools use it for the academic year ("2026-27"), and some also use it for intakes, groups or batches.
It is only a label. Adding a session, or changing which session a student carries, does not:
- promote anybody to the next class
- close or open an academic year
- change any fee, challan or result
- switch reports to a different year
Promotion is its own screen under the Students menu, and it is what actually moves children up a class.
If you want real academic-year boundaries
That is a separate feature, Core › Academic Duration, which sets a start and end date and bounds examinations and attendance to it. It is switched off for every school unless yours has turned it on, and it is not related to the Session list.
Steps
- Go to Core › Sessions
- Type the session name, for example
2026-27 - Press Create
- The name is now selectable on student screens
Why a session will not delete
If students carry that session, the system refuses and says it is already linked with students. That is deliberate — deleting it would strip the label off their records. Leave the old session in the list; it does no harm.
Common confusion
"I added the new session but students are still in the old class." Correct — that is expected. Use the promotion screen to move them.
"Which session should reports use?" Reports filter on whatever you pick on the report screen. The Session list only decides what is available to pick.
