Core › Academic Duration lets your school declare its academic year — a start date and an end date — and then decide whether work outside those dates is allowed.
It is switched off for every school by default. Until someone at your school turns it on, this screen changes nothing at all.
What it can bound
Four areas, each set separately:
- Student attendance
- Employee attendance
- Examinations
- What parents see in the Parents App
Each one is set to off, warn or block:
- off — no effect at all
- warn — the entry is still saved, and a banner tells you it falls outside the year
- block — the entry is refused, with a message naming the year and its dates
Start at warn for a month. It shows you exactly what block would have refused before anything is actually refused.
What it never touches
Fees and every report are permanently exempt. Challans, payments, fee reports and all other reports ignore Academic Duration completely, whatever it is set to.
And closing a year is not a data operation: opening or closing an academic year never moves, copies, archives or deletes a single row of school data. It sets a flag and writes an audit entry.
It does not promote students
Promotion stays where it has always been — the Class Transfer screen. Closing a year does not move any child into the next class.
Related but different
- Core › Sessions is only a text label on a student record. It is not connected to this screen.
- A fiscal year (for accounts) is a different thing from an academic year, and setting one does not set the other.
Common confusion
"We turned on block and now old attendance cannot be corrected." That is what block means — dates outside the active year are refused, including edits to rows already there. Set the module back to warn if you still need to fix history.
"Which year applies?" Only the single active year enforces anything. Closed and upcoming years are there for reading.
