Tick Exclude Failed Students on Exam & Att (formerly Exam & Attendance) › Examination › Examination Reports, under Advanced Filters, beside Historical Records.
The problem it fixes
Positions are worked out from total marks over whatever was evaluated. So a student examined in three subjects can out-total a student who sat and passed five, and take the class position.
What the tick box does
- A student who fails any subject is left out of the class and section position ranking, so 1st / 2nd / 3rd are worked out among fully passing students only.
- They still appear on the report with all of their marks. Their position cell reads
---. - Students below a removed student move up to close the gap.
- Their result card gains a Subjects Not Cleared block at the bottom, listing each failed subject with Total Marks, Passing Marks, Obtained Marks, Short By and Percent.
It is off by default, and it is a per-run report option, not a saved setting — tick it each time you want it. Every school's existing positions are unchanged unless somebody ticks it.
🔴 Where the passing marks come from
There is no per-subject passing-marks field in EDUBase. The passing marks printed on the card are worked out:
passing marks = the subject's total marks × the school's pass mark ÷ 100
The school's pass mark is one percentage set for the school, with an optional override per class. If your school has not set one, a built-in 40% is used and the report says so on the card rather than letting a number the school never chose look like school policy.
Set the pass mark before relying on this option, or the ranking is being decided by that 40%.
What counts as failing a subject
- Marks are compared raw, not weighted, so a Test Type Weightage setting cannot change whether a subject passes.
- A subject sat over several tests is added up first, then compared.
- A subject worth 0 total marks is skipped, not failed — an award list created but not yet marked would otherwise exclude the whole class.
- Being absent counts as a fail (a missed paper scores 0), and the block says not present rather than showing it as a bad attempt.
- Only marks-based subjects count. Conduct-style graded subjects never counted towards positions and still do not.
A long date range excludes far more students
"Passed everything" across two years is a much harder test than across one term. On a school's full history it can exclude most of a class. Set the date range to the term you actually mean.
Common confusion
"The failed student vanished from the report." They should not — they stay on the report with --- in the position column. If a student is genuinely missing, that is the date range or the Historical Records filter, not this tick box.
"Positions changed for students who passed." Expected. Once the failing students are taken out, everybody below them moves up.
"Passing Marks looks wrong." It is derived from the subject's total marks and the school's pass mark percentage. Check the pass mark setting — and check the caption on the block, which states which one was used.
