How do I create a subject in the Subjects list, choose its grading type (Marks, Checkbox, Direct Grading) and set Show in Diary?

Where in EDUBase: Exam › Subjects

Last updated

Exam › Subjects is the school's master list of subjects. A subject is created once here and then attached to classes on Exam › Subjects in Classes — creating it here alone puts it in no class, no award list and no report.

Steps

  1. Open Exam › Subjects. Fill the form at the top:
    • Subject Name
    • Subject Group — from Exam › Subject Groups; the first group is pre-selected.
    • Grading Type — see below.
    • Show in Diary — tick it if teachers should be able to write diary entries against this subject; unticked subjects are not offered in the Student Diary.
  2. Press Create. Then go to Exam › Subjects in Classes and attach it to the classes that study it.
  3. Edit with the pencil (name, group, grading type, diary flag), Update. Use the up/down arrows to reorder the list.

Grading Type — decide it before marks are entered

  • Marks — the normal subject: total marks per test, entered as oral and/or written figures; percentages, grades and positions come from these.
  • Checkbox — a tick per student (done / not done). No marks, no percentage.
  • Direct Grading — the teacher picks a grade (A, B, Good…) instead of typing marks. The choices come from the grading policy assigned to the student's class (Exam › Class Grading Policy), so a class without a policy has nothing to pick from.

Only Marks subjects count towards totals and class positions.

"The total on the result card shows 0"

Only Marks subjects add up to a total. For Direct Grading (and Checkbox) subjects the card shows the grades — the total for them stays 0, and there is no option to hide that zero. The grades printed above it are the result.

Common confusion

  • "Subject Already Exist In Selected Subject Group!" — the same name already exists in that group. The same name is allowed under a different group.
  • "Failed To Delete Subject, It may be associated with Award List!" — marks were entered against it; a subject with results is never deleted. Remove it from the classes that no longer need it instead.
  • The subject is missing from a class dropdown, date sheet or award list — it was never ticked for that class. This screen is the master list only.
  • The up/down order here sets the order in the Subjects lists and the Teacher App; it does not decide subject order on result cards.
